Endless Sunshine on a Cloudy Day tells the story of the McCanns, an Irish family battling to stay together despite the odds. The film examines life and mortality while celebrating our ability to find meaning in the darkest of times. This is a story about the power of the human spirit.

This film is director John Connors’ first documentary feature. He writes, “It has helped me deal with love and loss in my own family... This film, I hope, will inspire people to believe that no matter the problem, it is only one’s mindset that will lead you to the light.”

Film Review: John Connors’ debut feature is a heartbreakingly honest account of the final months of social influencer Jade McCann. As Jade’s emoji-laden Instagram posts first reveal her father’s unexpected cancer diagnosis, tragically followed only months later by her own, we are invited straight into the heart of her family as they face their mortality together, juggling resignation, acceptance, fear and humour. Told through Connors’ intimate black and white footage of her family mixed with Jade’s own social media confessionals as she documents their cancer battle, the film offers a unique look at the collision between the performative, filtered online world as it comes into contact with brutal reality. Connors underlines the point by showing Jade’s follower tally as it rises and falls as the all-too-real drama peaks and subsides. Unsurprisingly, the film received a standing ovation at the Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival earlier this year, where it won the Audience Award for Best Film. And while there’s an inevitable sadness and poignancy to the piece, first-time director Connors' raw, unflinching film ultimately stands as an inspiring testament to the unbreakable bonds and sheer bravery of an average Irish family in the face of adversity.
